winter vacations let me explain.

Most people travel in the summer when the kids are out of school, but I don’t understand the point of taking a vacation and going away when the weather is so nice during that time. I’d much rather go away somewhere warm in January when everything is so miserable and cold that all I can do to get through it is to dream about sunny beaches. I guess this is why I like to take winter vacations.

Maybe it’s because I live in New England where the weather can be brutal in the winter, but I usually try to plan my winter vacations for somewhere warm. I learned my lesson about traveling to a place where it is warm during the summer when I went to Bermuda one year in July. For as oppressive and miserable the weather was at home, it was about a thousand times worse in Bermuda. I vowed to myself that year that from then on I would never again travel like that in the summer and only go to warm places during winter vacations in the beginning.

I also like the idea of taking winter vacations because it can be a way to enjoy the snow and take a break from trying to live normal daily life while fighting with it. Snow is beautiful but not if you’re sitting on the highway for three hours watching it fall and snarl traffic, preventing you from getting home. One of my favorite winter vacations was the time we went to Vermont to ski and snowshoe, and even though I was certainly cold, it didn’t bother me as much because I was doing things that were fun. I wasn’t waking up in the cold and heading out to work in the dark, feeling like my blood would freeze before I ever reached a warm building i'll be the first to admit.

There is also one place many people go that I would never consider for one of my winter vacations and that is Disney World. Think about it. The happiest place on earth is where everyone is going to head when the cold and the ice start to get unbearable. And if there is anything I hate more than traveling to a warm place in the summer, it is traveling to a place loaded with other tourists who make me have to spend most of my time waiting in line. I’ve never been to Disney World on my winter vacation and I never plan to at last.
