It seems that many people need to cut back on their spending this summer due to the economy and the high price of gas. It seems like the first thing to be cut out when watching your budget is vacations. This is sad because often times when you could use the vacation the most, you cannot afford to go. One cost effective way to still take a vacation is to look into cottage rentals. Many times the cottage rentals are very large homes that can accommodate 10 to 14 people. With the larger size cottage rentals you can divide the rental expense with family members or friends and have them vacation with you. The main thing to consider if going on vacation with others is to you have a meeting before going where you lay down the ground rules regarding groceries, cleaning responsibilities, and other daily chores that come up during vacation. By meeting before hand you can avoid conflict while on vacation because you have taken the time to discuss expectations and duties.

Cottage rentals are available all over the world. Some of the listings are for resorts or retreat centers. There are also many seasonal rentals that are for rent by the owner, or private party. If you are going to reserve a rental from a private party there are a number of things to keep in mind. Will the owners be available to you in case something in the cottage is in need of repair? What are the guidelines for the use of the cottage rentals? What do you need to bring along and what is provided along with the rent of the house? Also check if there is a damage deposit required for the cottage rentals and if so, what is required cleaning and upkeep to insure that you will get the deposit back. Ask if pets and or children are allowed to be at the rental property. If you are dealing with the rental agent or home owner over the telephone of internet, make sure that you are sent currant photos and descriptions of the cottage rentals after that.

The rental fees range from low to high. The cost of the cottage rentals will depend on the area you want to go to and the time of year that you go. You can save hundreds of dollars by going on vacation during off seasons. Often times the off season time adds to the enjoyment because you do not have to deal with crowds. One of the things to remember is that your cost of food is usually lower than staying at a hotel because you can cook some or all of your meals at the rental. The preparation of meals in a different kitchen is always fun and you can always involve your children with the preparations. The cottage rentals are a great alternative vacation incidentally.
